You don't form massive sheet steel skins. You'd make it the same way you make spiral-wound pipe; you'd just slowly adjust the diameter. Spiral winding would be perfect - they could really churn these starships out that way, and each one would have a flawless mirror finish.

Spiral-winding is great for uniform thickness. We used that for the Hyperloop vacuum tunnel. However, Starship skin thickness will vary considerably according to loads.
