Evolutionary bias.
Positive news is nice to know, but negative news, for almost our entire evolutionary history, could mean death, so higher priority.
What really messes things up in the modern era is that negative news can now reach everyone on Earth, but still triggers a limbic danger response even when there is no actual danger.
