Once TFR is below replacement you're in a real pickle, because young people need to have *significantly more* children than their mothers in order to the push the needle back, simultaneously groaning under an unprecedented burden of elderly dependents

The average age of Italian women at first marriage is 33 years old, at first childbirth, 32. Even allowing for births outside of wedlock, the Italian TFR of 1.2 isn't surprising. If nuptial/fertility patterns keep up another 30 years, it's over.
