To clarify, you do not have to pay if you’re using a common and free two-factor app like Google Authenticator or Duo Mobile, which is more secure than SMS two-factor. In March we made SMS two-factor only available to Premium subscribers so there’s plenty of notice on this change.

We can confirm that the account @SECGov was compromised and we have completed a preliminary investigation. Based on our investigation, the compromise was not due to any breach of X’s systems, but rather due to an unidentified individual obtaining control over a phone number
