That’s because there’s been a radical change in how postmodern culture told stories about “villains.”
Villains were reframed as victims of prior oppression or trauma.
Crime became the excusable result of an unjust system, & “law abiding” meant being complicit in that system.

I see it constantly and it's bizarre.
I don't think it's even a conscious process... They just reflexively defend bad guys.
