The joints will have shielding, but it’s hard to ensure a good seal. Transpiration cooling (or simply higher pressure cold gas flow) would purge the area behind the hot gas seal.

I would love to see a few of them on the 20KM to see how they hold up or adhere as advertised like they did on starhopper! But as far as necessity, I don’t think we’ll see them on the entire Starship belly for the 20KM hop.

It sounds like @robert_zubrin spent some time with Elon recently and one really interesting take away is that Starship could survive a LEO reentry with no heatshields?! 🤯 Is that just “It COULD technically” or “it WILL” fly LEO missions sans heat shield @elonmusk ?

Unfortunately, Starship unlikely to survive LEO entry intact without shielding on windward side, but none required on leeward. Even windward shielding is very light.

Should preface this saying that feedback from early Tesla Solar roof owners has been v positive. It’s stunning vs a regular roof in person imo. Photos don’t do it justice.
