No, C became the default because it was, and is, awesome. We could have changed 50 times, but we didn't.
I mean, everyone loves Modula-II, but when its time to write an operating system, you don't play around. You do it in C.

It is the oldest language normies get to touch. They believe C is a pinnacle of language design and minimalism, which they inferred from historical success.
In reality, C became the default for everything due to UNIX and portability.

One things stood out from yesterday’s “Bring kids to work day” was that everyone was very proud to show their own works to their kids regardless of functions or teams.
Nothing is better and encouraging than your own kids complimenting “you are so cool”.
