I have seen first hand the errors that can occur from untyped enums, but sometimes converting to an enum class takes so many static_cast<int> littered around the code that it doesn't feel like a win. I still need to remind myself to default to using enum class on new code.

Compilers need to improve imo. Most type, pointer (or other memory) problems can be detected at compile time or disambiguated by asking the user.
