To clarify, you do not have to pay if you’re using a common and free two-factor app like Google Authenticator or Duo Mobile, which is more secure than SMS two-factor. In March we made SMS two-factor only available to Premium subscribers so there’s plenty of notice on this change.

Based on our investigation, the compromise was not due to any breach of X’s systems, but rather due to an unidentified individual obtaining control over a phone number
