engineering student in 1974, I struggled with calculus. Our textbook was not written for engineers but math students (I guess) who needed "proofs" about everything. Plus, all our prof did was read from the book and write what he read on the chalkboard.

Teaching anyone anything needs to start with establishing relevance, otherwise you’re asking our poor little meat computer brain to use up neurons for no purpose. It naturally tends to refuse.
