Turns out the recycling industry is one giant scam too: Europe's wealthy countries ship their "recyclable" garbage to poor nations like Poland and Turkey which just end up burning it.

Home garbage recycling is pointless. If it mattered, they could just sort the garbage at the dump.
Recycling of lithium-ion batteries, however, is economically sensible, as a dead battery is essentially super high grade ore.
