This would be so handy when needing to adjust passenger seat when you’re already seated on driver’s seat.

This is cool!! Will you please allow us access (for trial only) so we can also train our models ? 😃
Elon Musk

Yeah, we will open Dojo for training as a web service once we work out the bugs

There are a lot of pointless zeroes in FP32 neural nets. You can chop off 16 of the 32 bits without losing meaningful precision. This works well with neural nets, but not with regular computing, which expects extreme precision.

Will you guys design your own GPU/ASIC for training or use A100 ?
Elon Musk
@elonmusk · 20. Sept. 2020
Dojo uses our own chips & a computer architecture optimized for neural net training, not a GPU cluster. Could be wrong, but I think it will be best in world.

With the success of FP16 data types in machine learning, there is talk about FP8 data types. I suspect that having a few different curves, akin to sRGB in graphics, would be better. An 8 bit Gaussian distribution, in particular, seems likely to be useful.
Elon Musk
@elonmusk · 20. Sept. 2020
For Dojo, we’re betting on FP16 with floating floating point (essentially, truncating mostly zeroes), so it feels like FP32 & existing software just works. We considered FP8 for a while, but everyone hated it. I even asked Twitter! For inference, int8 works great.

Damn! So Semi trucks will actually be able to drive inside through the Texas factory
Then efficiently deliver parts right to the line I guess?
Elon Musk@elonmusk· 20. Sept. 2020@wholemars There’ll be lots of green space around factory, but building itself is continuous. The “open” areas inside are covered. They’re internal semi truck roads inside a giant monolithic building.

So this is terafactory texas.
3 buildings, with open green space in between. All together, it makes up the traditional diamond Gigafactory shape.
Walk through an ecological paradise moving between different parts of the factory.

A prior track record of exceptional achievement in engineering *is* required, but *no* prior experience working on the brain or human physiology is required. We will teach you what’s known about the brain, which is not much tbh.

What was the main drive to leave PayPal and start these two companies? Was it the mission
Elon Musk

Felt I had done enough on the Internet (Zip2 & PayPal) that my work would be useful to others. Needed to get going on accelerating sustainable energy & making life multiplanetary.

If @elonmusk had just left his $160 million Paypal payout in $PYPL...it would be worth $21 billion today (133x gain).
Instead, he bet literally every penny on:
• creating the 1st mass-manufacturing car company in the US in a century
• go to Mars
What a f**king legend.
Elon Musk
@elonmusk · 19. Sept. 2020
To be frank, in the early days, I thought there was >90% chance that both SpaceX & Tesla would be worth $0. The press & aerospace / automotive industry at the time (correctly) agreed with me.
