Yes, the interviews from Eastern Ukrainians living in the area directly counter your argument. Also, a sympathetic Russian candidate did win in 2010 in Ukraine because of the eastern parts of the country. That president was ousted in 2014 and after Crimea/LPR/DPR all broke away.
