Many people can't tell the difference between defending a principle which applies to a person they dislike and defending that person.
I genuinely wonder if they are doing it on purpose or they're somehow incapable of understanding the difference.

Most people (maybe all?) are instinctively moral relativists.
If you’re perceived as being in the group, you can do no wrong, whereas those outside the group can do no right.
This instinct can be overridden, but requires a strong commitment to truth over convenience.
