Russia will keep making territorial gains in mostly Russian-speaking areas until they reach mostly Ukrainian-speaking areas, at which point local opposition will make further gains extremely difficult.
This notion that Russia can arbitrarily steamroll any region, even with extreme local opposition, is demonstrably false, as they would otherwise have conquered all of Ukraine two years ago.
