I also think the distinction between science and engineering is a foolish one, aimed primarily at puffing up the self-importance of those who call themselves the former.
What actually matters is working on the limiting factor. Sometimes, that is understanding what already exists based on existing data (usually referred to as “science”), but the vast majority of the time the limiting factor is gaining new data. That’s why Galileo made a telescope.
Being a physicist today means waiting for new telescopes and colliders to be built. At one point I considered a career in physics, but concluded I would be waiting decades for some big government program to complete and it may just get canceled entirely, like SSC.
