tinygrad will write that C for you. Our new driver compiles all interaction with the GPU to C, so once it's running the CPU does next to nothing.

SpaceX has almost finished writing V1.0 of an in-house AI training stack in C that exact-maps to 220k GB300s with 800G NICs, making heavy use of pipeline parallelism and getting as close to bare metal as possible. The potential speed improvement vs JAX for large training runs is

Agreed, the CPU cores on the GB300 should be tasked with agentic jobs. Very little of their compute is needed for GPU management.

ANNOUNCEMENT: WE’RE SAVING SCIENCE! We’re often told that science is “self-correcting.” But that’s not really true. Science doesn’t correct itself like a thermostat adjusting the temperature in your house. Science is a human institution run by human beings. And human beings

Yes. It’s not that we’ve discovered some magic bullet, but rather that JAX, or at least the open source version of it, is mostly optimized for small to medium-sized training runs on Google TPUs, whereas we need to massive training runs on Nvidia GPUs. Pipeline parallelism is essential and crushes fully-sharded data parallelism at scale. And C will compile to the most efficient binary short of assembly. Maybe we will do a little assembly too.

Composer 2.5 being Pareto dominant in coding per CursorBench is important. This is after only a few weeks of supplemental training and/or RL in the Colossus 2 cluster.   The 1.5 trillion parameter version of Grok will likely be a much better base model than Kimi. We shall see.

SpaceX has not committed to leasing Colossus for years, although it’s possible that may be what happens. This is a 180 day lease with 90 day notice mutual cancellation thereafter. The short term was our request, not Anthropic’s. We won’t leave them hanging and will provide a reasonable off-ramp, but if compute gets super tight I said we might need it back at some point.
