It was an interesting conversation.
Combustion rockets are the best way to get to Mars in the short to medium term.
There is perhaps some merit to a fission rocket shuttling between low Earth orbit and low Mars orbit, but chemical rockets are well-suited to getting to orbit, given their high thrust/mass and low residual mass.

In a 'free' and 'democratic' country people shouldn't be threatened for voting the 'wrong way' or abstaining from voting.
Support who you want, loudly or quietly, but you shouldn't be coerced or harassed.
