StarShip is a mashup of a Falcon Heavy center core, 2nd stage, Dragon 2, and a fairing half! 😆

Falcon 9 right now is kind of weak when it comes to upper level winds due to it being so long and thin. I know Starship will be more resistant to them but what are the current estimates on what Starship will be able to handle regarding upper level winds?
Elon Musk
Elon Musk
@elonmusk · Jun 26, 2019
Almost anything. Length/diameter is much lower & Starship doesn’t have a hammerhead fairing that acts like main sail.

How easy/practical would it be to have a longer (and/or wider) 2nd stage with perhaps 50% more fuel and reduce the same amount from the centre core? Same lift off weight but much slower re-entry for centre core and slightly better dV overall.

You’re touching on a good critique of Falcon 9. Our 1st stage to 2nd stage propellant ratio is too high. We’re fixing that with Starship.

Will passengers be allowed to move around during the flight?
Elon Musk

That would be unwise. Probably needs a restraint mechanism like Disney’s Space Mountain roller coaster. Would feel similar to Space Mountain in a lot of ways, but you’d exit on another continent.

~1000, as all seats would be “coach” & no toilets, pilot area or food galley needed. Most flights would only be 15 to 20 mins. It’s basically an ICBM traveling at Mach 25 that lands.

About 100, assuming people want cabins. Pressurized volume is similar to A380. Could take a lot more on shorter trips.

I always thought a large fairing like the 5m fairing on the Atlas V that connects to the first stage would be cool on the Falcon 9 and just opened up and let the upper stage out, then closed back up and landed with the first stage.

That was our design approach in early days, but fairing mass is much higher & stability of booster in ground winds is low

Frangible would def hurt reusability. Also, presumably those quarter sections are actuated or aero control will be impossible.

This announcement from Europe is remarkable for its frankness. It explicitly says what SpaceX’s competitors must really think about a reusable Falcon 9, but rarely say in public. arstechnica.com/science/2019/0…

Good to see this. Splitting interstage into 4 sections will have some challenges, but could work.
