A French writer explained the error in 1850. A Nobel economist repeated it in a Pennsylvania lecture hall in 1978. Governments still make it every year. Almost nobody watches the clip.
This is Milton Friedman on the parable of the broken window, the oldest mistake in economics.
The trick is that the destruction is visible and the cost is not. You see the glazier get paid. You never see what the shopkeeper would have bought instead.
Watch how he sets it up before he names the fallacy. He lets the audience agree with the wrong answer first.
176 years of warnings. Still the most persuasive bad idea in politics.

This is why I switched Starship to stainless steel.
We have since created our own new alloys and no longer use 301.
ZaxtR@AmX_ZaxTr· 22. Aug. 2026Why did SpaceX choose 301 stainless steel for Starship

You cannot both believe in evolution and believe that eugenics wouldn’t work. You can object to it on moral grounds, but not factual grounds. Dawkins was right about this.

Dr. Ian Garner@irgarner· 22. Aug. 2026Settled questions that academics don't need to research in 2026:
- Earth is round
- Evolution is real
- Eugenics is bullshit

Starlink Stories: From the eye of a 190-mph tornado to the middle of the Indian Ocean, these innovators are using @Starlink to make the impossible a reality.
"Starlink is probably our most crucial piece of equipment. It's really been a game-changer."
"I am a lot braver when it comes to entering foreign lands thanks to Starlink."
"Previously, wirelessly downloading a single AutoPath mapping file took 20 to 30 minutes of agonizing wait time, during which the tractor engine had to remain running. "Every minute we're sitting there just idling the tractor is costing us money, whether in fuel or wasted, useless hours we put on the machine. With Starlink, files download almost instantly."
"We can save lives with a functional real-time earthquake monitoring network like the one we operate."
It's worth reading these stories in the article:

A world with zero discrimination would still produce wildly unequal group outcomes.
Thomas Sowell demonstrated how firstborn sons score higher on IQ tests and land more prestigious careers than their younger brothers, but nobody blames discrimination for that gap.
Canadian junior hockey shows that players born January through March dominate the leagues because the January 1 cutoff makes them the oldest and strongest kids in every age group.
Overseas Chinese communities run retail across Southeast Asia, Lebanese merchants dominate trade in West Africa, and German immigrants once owned the American brewing industry.
Same specialization repeats under completely different majorities and legal systems.
Treating every disparity as automatic proof of discrimination starts with the wrong diagnosis, and the wrong diagnosis never delivers the right cure.
But the fantasy that some planner can just rearrange people like chess pieces and force equal results remains one of the most stubborn fallacies in economics.

Three months later, Grok’s progress is amazing, and @bot makes it even more powerful and easier to use.
This is the fidelity using the same prompt: “Explain Navier-Stokes equation and how it relates to airfoil design with actual fluid dynamics simulation.”

Yun-Ta Tsai@yunta_tsai· 18. Mai 2026Attempt to use Grok Build to visualize some physics concepts for education.
Prompt: "I want you to explain Navier-Stokes equations and how it relates to airfoil design. visualize this with math-manim tool"

Starlink has around 11,040 working satellites in orbit. The next nine largest LEO constellations combined have only about 2,100.
Starlink alone is more than 5x bigger than all nine combined.

AIDS is...not what we were told in high school in the 1990s.
Smirkley@Smirkley· 22. Aug. 2026If you had condomless sex with 100 random white women, the odds of getting HIV would be 1 in 105,000.
That’s before adjusting for college and lack of injection drug use, and other factors.

My challenge that if you can conceive of a nightmare, I can conceive of a way of it got USAID funding, remains utterly undefeated
Mike Benz@MikeBenzCyber· 23. Aug. 2026As soon as I saw Ghent University's tell-tale blend of being (1) run by someone in high-level statecraft, (2) awash in woke academia & (3) overrun by transgender madness, I immediately knew USAID must have been funding it. Turns out it was USAID-partnered for 25 yrs

Rothmus 🏴@Rothmus· 22. Aug. 2026No amount of penance will suffice to stop the suicide of the West.
In 2006, Pascal Bruckner diagnosed the illness as “Western masochism”, a civilization so convinced its own sins explain every problem on earth that it turns self-hatred into a strange form of narcissism.
