I assume there is also a lot of risk in terms of the condition of the capsule after DM-1, since you will be reflying the same capsule for the abort?
Elon Musk
@elonmusk · 22. Feb. 2019
Yes, lot of risk

What happens to the second stage after deployment? Does it shut down and keep coasting alongside the cargo? Get out of the way of the cargo? Does it deorbit and burn up? @elonmusk @SpaceX
Elon Musk

Deorbits & burns up over the Pacific

Will the second stage be a dummy stage? Any special preparations to help make the upper stage survive the high pressure load at Max Q?
Elon Musk
@elonmusk · 22. Feb. 2019
Upper stage is flight, except mass sim in place of Merlin. It will get fragged for sure by aero loads & Dragon abort thrusters.

How many boosters are you planning on having in the Block 5 fleet?
Elon Musk
@elonmusk · 22. Feb. 2019
Including Heavy, which is 3 cores, around 20 or so

In a follow up tweet, @elonmusk says that this booster's fourth flight will be the inflight abort in April. However, the official NASA Commercial Crew schedule says that the abort test will occur in June. 🤔

Depends on when Crew Dragon comes back. That’s scheduled for launch next Saturday, but lot of new hardware, so time error bars are big.

High probability of this particular rocket getting destroyed by Dragon supersonic abort test. Otherwise, at least 20 or 30 missions for Falcon 9. Starship will take over before the F9 fleet reaches end of life.

Elon, I’d love to hear what you thought about Kestrel, the engine most people probably don’t know about.
Elon Musk

Always liked Kestrel. It was the Robin Hood of engines.

A more realistic stepping stone is Antimatter Catalyzed Fission/Fusion engines, only needs tiny amounts of antimatter to drive 'regular' nuclear reactions. But before we get to that there's lots of other more accessible technologies.
Elon Musk
@elonmusk · 21. Feb. 2019
Advanced, reusable rockets are all we need to become a multiplanet civilization. Once we have a city on Mars, interplanetary travel will create a forcing function for vast improvements in spaceflight.

Are there component differences between SN1 and SN2 that would prevent damage?

can't we use the energy of the Sun to create anti-matter, and use that for interstellar travel? Maybe using a Dyson sphere/ring? @elonmusk

Have the most recent tests in McGregor been Merlins or Raptors? The last 4+ have seemed very similar... w/ one exception last wk (Fri. night)
Elon Musk
@elonmusk · 21. Feb. 2019
Merlins. The max chamber pressure run damaged Raptor SN 1 (as expected). A lot of the parts are fine for reuse, but next tests will be with SN 2, which is almost done.

Got any plans for anti-matter production for energy storage on Earth?
Elon Musk
@elonmusk · 21. Feb. 2019
Anti-matter production would require vast amounts of energy. No need though. We have a super reliable, massive, free fusion reactor called the sun.

Nuclear engines require a shield, which means a complete redesign of the whole propulsion bus and probably everything else.
Elon Musk
@elonmusk · 21. Feb. 2019
Exactly. Super money move is anti-matter drive, especially if you solve capturing antiprotons in deep space.

Pinter injector tends to have hot & cold streaks. Hot streaks burn a rut at the throat that accelerates erosion.
Elon Musk

You can see the streaks on the vacuum Merlin nozzle in flight videos
